Project HomeSafe is an industry-government partnership that is helping to promote firearms safety education across the country. The program was developed by the National Shooting Sports Foundation to ensure that everyone who owns a firearm knows how to safely store that firearm in the home. The gun lock safety kits being provided through Project HomeSafe are paid for by companies that voluntarily contribute a percentage of their sales. They are absolutely FREE to residents of Glocester. Glocester is the third location in Rhode Island to participate in Project HomeSafe and joins over 25 cites and counties nationwide in this public safety initiative. Other Project HomeSafe partners in Rhode Island are Providence and North Providence. East Greenwich and Foster have also signed up to participate in the program. To date, Project HomeSafe has distributed over 350,000 gun lock safety kits, and expects to distribute a total of 500,000 this year.
Project HomeSafe is a focused nationwide program sponsored by the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) whose purpose is to promote safe firearms handling and storage practices among all firearms owners through safety education messages and the distribution of free gun locking devices. The program is based on developing local outreach efforts in partnership with state/city governments, law enforcement agencies, civic organizations and the private sector.
Firearms accidents in the home can result from an unauthorized individual, often a child, finding a loaded and unsecured gun in the home. The risk of firearm-related injuries or deaths can be reduced when firearm owners are aware of and fully understand their responsibility to handle firearms safely and store them in a secure manner.
The goal of Project HomeSafe is to inform and educate all forearms owners on key safety issues and to encourage secure storage through the distribution on gun locking devices in partnership with communities that participate in the Project HomeSafe program.
The police departments of Project HomeSafe communities are critical to the success of the program. Police departments will manage the distribution of the gun locking devices and safety material to forearm owners within their community.
We expect the popularity of Project HomeSafe to grow as comminutes and police departments become aware that it is available to them. Project HomeSafe will continue to provide safety kits with gun locking devices to cities that adopt the program for as long as there are interested communities.
